What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery.  This natural approach looks first to the spine and other joints in the body for dysfunction, which may lead to various physical conditions. As chiropractors, we focus on locating and removing subluxations, or fixations in the joints of the body.

At Fusion Chiropractic & Wellness, we use many specialized techniques to treat subluxations. The most utilized technique involves a manual “adjustment.”  During an adjustment, we apply a quick and gentle stretching of the affected joint. The patient may hear a popping noise. These audibles are simply pockets of air being released from the joint.  Following the adjustment, the patient typically experiences a decrease in pain, increased range of motion, and an overall feeling of relaxation. We are also trained in and offer several other adjusting techniques to insure the patient’s comfort and satisfaction.  In addition, we also specialize in various soft tissue techniques, nutritional counseling, physical therapies, rehabilitative exercise, and lifestyle modification programs.

Often, alignment issues are caused by tight muscles, and tight muscles are caused by alignment issues. ~Dr. Freeman

What is a subluxation?

The word “subluxation” comes from the Latin words sub meaning “less than” and luxate meaning “to dislocate”.  In other words, a subluxation is improper position of a joint in the body which causes biomechanical dysfunction. When a subluxation occurs in the bones of the spine, known as vertebra, it can irritate the delicate spinal nerves that branch out from the spinal cord and interfere with the function of the tissues they control (including the joint, muscle, organs, and even the skin.) This happens because of interference of the communication between the brain and the tissues. This is called a vertebral subluxation.  The symptoms usually begin as pain, abnormal posture, and/or decreased range of motion.  Over time, the decrease in nerve function and altered biomechanics can lead to more serious, chronic conditions.

  • Car accidents (and other trauma/injuries)
  • Stress (causes poor digestion, allergies, tight muscles)
  • Poor diet (lack of nutrients, excess of sugar & fat)
  • Postural strain (working on a computer, talking on the phone, improper lifting –most jobs require habitual postures that can cause subluxations)
  • Improper sleep conditions
  • “Weekend Warrior” activities

How can chiropractic care affect my health?

As you may already know, the nervous system controls your entire body; orchestrating and coordinating all cellular functions. The spinal column (which is the chiropractor’s focus) encases the spinal cord and nerve roots and is responsible for its protection.  Many nerves branch off the spinal cord to allow you to communicate with the rest of your organs and body. This system causes your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your body to heal itself.  Since this system is so important to your survival it is the only system completely encased in bone, the skull and spinal column.

In short, because the body’s innate recuperative powers are affected by and integrated through the nervous system, correcting spinal abnormalities which irritate the nervous system can lead to a number of favorable results in patients suffering from various, seemingly non-spinal health conditions.

The doctors at Fusion recognize that regardless of the type of the doctor you consult, doctors do not heal your body; your body heals itself. You were born with that innate ability. For example, if your nervous system is working properly and you cut yourself, how does that cut heal?  While you may not know all the details of the process, your body does!

What conditions can we help you with?

Because chiropractic treatments are primarily applied to the spinal region, many individuals incorrectly assume that chiropractors treat only back and neck ailments. While we do quickly and effectively eliminate back and neck pain, it is NOT the only goal. Ultimately, our objective is to restore and optimize your health and function.

How do I know if I should be checked by a chiropractor?

It is said that by the time you are 18 the average person will have had 1000 minor injuries in their life. Think of a child learning to walk, or ride a bike there are usually a few falls involved. Did you ever play sports, or ruff house or heaven forbid fight with your siblings? For this reason it is a good idea to get your body and spine checked out every once in a while, just as you would get your eyes, teeth or blood pressure checked!

Even if you feel fine, chiropractic can help your body maintain its required level of health and function at 100%. Your chiropractor can recommend a preventive spinal care program and advise you on correct posture, dietary information and rehabilitative exercises.
